Achieving Band 7+ in IELTS Writing Task 2 is the goal of most test-takers, yet it remains one of the most challenging exam sections. The essay accounts for two-thirds of your Writing score, assessed across four criteria: Task Response (TR), Cohesion and Coherence (CC), Lexical Resource (LR), and Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA).
## 1. Master Essay Structure
Use the standard four-paragraph model: - **Introduction** (2–3 sentences): Paraphrase the question and state your thesis. - **Body Paragraph 1** (4–6 sentences): First main idea with explanation and a real-world example. - **Body Paragraph 2** (4–6 sentences): Second main idea, similarly supported. - **Conclusion** (2 sentences): Summarise your position without new ideas.
**Sample:** "Some people believe universities should focus on academic subjects. This essay agrees because theoretical knowledge builds critical thinking, and specialised skills are increasingly in demand."
## 2. Nail Task Response (TR)
Band 7 requires addressing all parts of the question. Identify the prompt type (Opinion / Discuss Both Views / Advantages & Disadvantages / Problem & Solution / Direct Question). Take a clear position and maintain it. Support every claim with specific explanation — vague generalisations cost marks. If asked "Discuss both views and give your opinion," cover both sides equally before stating your own view.
## 3. Build Cohesion and Coherence (CC)
Use linking devices naturally. For adding: Furthermore, Moreover. For contrasting: However, Nevertheless. For examples: For instance, Such as. For concluding: In conclusion, Overall. For cause: Consequently, Therefore.
**Pitfall**: Don't start every sentence with a linker. Use reference words (this, such, these) and topic-specific substitution instead. Each paragraph needs one central topic — open with a topic sentence and develop it without mixing ideas.
## 4. Upgrade Lexical Resource (LR)
Band 7 requires precise vocabulary — not "big" words. Paraphrase the question in your introduction. Use natural collocations: *play a pivotal role, bridge the gap, pose a threat.* Show awareness of less common vocabulary: *mitigate, exacerbate, foster, undermine.* Avoid memorised word lists, repeating the question's words, and informal register — use *children* not *kids*.
## 5. Strengthen Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA)
Produce a mix of simple and complex structures with few errors. Essential forms: - **Conditionals**: *If governments invested more in renewables, emissions would decrease.* - **Relative clauses**: *Students who receive regular feedback improve faster.* - **Subordinate clauses**: *Although technology has transformed education, traditional methods still hold value.*
Proofread in the last 3 minutes — comma splices lose GRA marks.
## 6. Time Management (40 minutes) - **Analyse & Plan**: 5 min — brainstorm two solid body ideas and examples. - **Write**: 30 min. - **Review & Edit**: 5 min.
Planning is non-negotiable for Band 7+. A planned essay writes itself; an unplanned one meanders.
## Common Mistakes to Avoid 1. **Memorised introductions** — a template guarantees Band 6. 2. **Irrelevant examples** — every example must support your argument directly. 3. **Over-complication** — a clear, simple essay outperforms a tangled one. 4. **Ignoring word count** — 250 words minimum; 180–200 caps you at Band 6. 5. **No conclusion** — even one sentence is better than none.
